The New American Standard Bible (NASB) is an English translation of the Bible by the Lockman Foundation. It was first published in stages, with the Gospel of John released in 1960, followed by the Gospels in 1962, and the complete New Testament in 1963. The Psalms were published in 1968, and the entire Bible, including both the Old and New Testaments, was released in 1971. Modified editions were published between 1972 and 1977, and an updated edition was released in 1995. Alongside the Bible, an Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible was published in 1997, which references Strong's Concordance for word numbering.
The translators of the NASB aimed to adhere closely to the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts while ensuring grammatical correctness and understandability. They also aimed to give proper recognition to Jesus Christ without personalizing the work. The NASB serves as an alternative to other translations, such as the Revised Standard Version (1946–1952/1971) and the 1929 revision of the American Standard Version (ASV), which some consider to be theologically liberal.
The translation draws from Rudolf Kittel's Biblia Hebraica and the Dead Sea Scrolls for the Hebrew text, while Eberhard Nestle's Novum Testamentum Graece was consulted for the Greek text. The NASB combines a contemporary English style with a word-for-word translation approach, making changes to idioms when necessary for modern readers. However, more literal renderings are often indicated in footnotes.
The greatest strength of the NASB lies in its reliability and faithfulness to the original languages. Additionally, it offers verse printing as individual units, although more recent editions are available in paragraph format.
Features of the NASB Bible app include easy navigation between books and chapters, a beautiful design, and a user-friendly experience. Users can also track their progress in reading, share meaningful verses with attractive background images, and access clickable links to specific verses. Other features include the ability to highlight or underline sections of commentary and add personal notes or bookmarks.
